St. Stephen Bulgarian Orthodox Church in Tsarigrad Foundation was established for the purpose of preserving the historical, cultural, and church legacy by supporting and maintaining the St. Stephen Bulgarian Orthodox Church in Istanbul, Turkey, as well as assisting in the preservation and popularization of its spiritual concepts. In order to achieve its goals and to further the preservation of the Church, the Foundation will finance reconstruction, preservation, and modernization programmes. It will also undertake the Church’s expenses related to its activities, support and maintenance, including the expenses for church accessories and souvenirs, brochures, and books. Expenses related to security service and for keeping the church and the yard clean and well maintained will also be covered by the Foundation.

In memoriam

It is with deep sadness and sorrow that St. Stephen Bulgarian Orthodox Church in Tsarigrad Foundation informs you of the passing away of Dimitar Atanasov - co-founder and Board Member of the Foundation, and a longtime member of the Church Board of Trustees of the Bulgarian community in Istanbul. Dimitar Atanasov was the only Bulgarian to be awarded personally the honorary title of Archon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople by Ecumenical Patriarch, Bartholomew. For his high contribution to the preservation and continuation of church activity among the Bulgarian community in Turkey, he was awarded The Order of St. Cyril and Methodius - first degree by President Rosen Plevneliev and the Order of St. Kliment Ohridski - first degree by the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.

Vasil Liaze-Foundation President
Liaze was born on March 3, 1940 in Istanbul, Turkey and is coming from an Orthodox family. He graduated from the “Fener” Istanbul Lyceum and is now an owner of a company producing plastic wrappings and matrixes. In 1960 he was elected president of the Gebze Organized Industrial Zone, and since 1995 he’s a member of the Executive Board of the Istanbul Chamber of Industry (ISO). He was elected President of the Bulgarian Orthodox Churches in Turkey in 2002.


Dimitri Atanasoff - Foundation Board Member
He was born on November 8, 1928 in Istanbul, Turkey into the Orthodox family of Mihail Atanasoff and Blagorodna Atanasoff. Up to third grade he studied at the Bulgarian school in Istanbul and later he continued his education in Gratz, Austria where he got a Bachelor degree in Philosophy. Dimitri Atanasoff's firm "Orbis Ticaret" operates as an exclusive representative and distributor of German and other European companies. He's been a chairman of the control-inspectoral committee of the Board of Trustees of the Bulgarian Orthodox Churches for 17 years, and 8 years ago he became a Board of Trustees member himself. The Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church bestowed him a number of awards, among which the Order of Merit St. Kliment Ochridski – First Class. Atanasoff is also a representative of the Bulgarian Patriarchate at the Oecumenical Patriarchate.


Prof. Dr. Ivan Zhelev - Foundation Board Member
Zhelev was born on September 9, 1944 in the town of Haskovo. He graduated from the Sofia Theological Academy (presently Faculty of Theology at Sofia University) and later graduated Philosophy from the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. From 2000 to 2004 Zhelev served as Dean of the Theolog ical Faculty of Sofia University. At present he is the Director of the Council of Ministers' Directorate of Religious Affairs. He is the official translator of the Holy Synod in Greek. Prof. Zhelev is also a member of the Bible translation team, a member of the Synodal Theological Commission of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.


Jenny Dimitrova Lazarova - Foundation Operative Manager
She was born on July 16, 1971 in Sofia. In 1989 graduated from the Sofia English Language School and in 1993 graduated from the State Institute of Library Studies. In 2007 she graduated from the Faculty of Theology at Sofia University “ St. Kliment Ohridsky”. She serves as an operative manager and PR of the St. Stephen Bulgarian Orthodox Church in Tsarigrad Foundation.


Chavdar Krasimirov Damianov - Foundation Board Member
He was born on on September 14, 1967 in Sofia. In 1985 he graduated from the Vocational School of internal-combustion engine “Wilhelm Pick”. In 1987 he graduated from Higher Military School of Construction Engineering “Gen. Blagoy Ivanov”. At present he is a manager of Kambourov&Partners law firm and a co-owner and manager of “Gas Energy” Ltd. From 1987 to 1990 he worked in the Civil Engineer Corps. From 1992 to 1994 he worked in the Ministry of Internal affairs. From 1994 to 2000 he worked in First Private Bank.


Yavor Nedev Kambourov - Foundation Founder
He was born on December 27, 1962 in Sofia. In 1980 he graduated from Hristo Botev High School - Sofia. In 1987 he graduated from Sofia University Law Department with a Masters of Law. Kambourov is a managing partner and a Founder of Kambourov&Partners law firm. He is a member of International Bar Association, London, as well as a member of Sofia Bar Association.


Metropolitan of Rousse town Naum /Andonov Dimitrov/ - Foundation Board Member
He was born on October 19, 1968 in Varna. He graduated from the School of Public Catering and Food Processing Industry - Varna. After doing his military service, he entered Sofia Clerical Seminary, in a parallel course of the Sofia Clerical Seminary near Cherepish station. In 1994 he graduated from the Theolog ical Faculty of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. In 1990 he was initiated into monkhood by the Right Reverend Bishop Gerasim, and under the spiritual guidance of His Eminence Kyrill - the Metropolitan of Varna and Veliki Preslav. In 1991 he was ordained Hierodeacon and in 1992 - Hiero monk. From 1992 to 1996 he served as a tutor in the Plovdiv Clerical Seminary "Sts. Cyril and Methodi". On December 20, 1998 he was ordained Archimandrite after the decision taken by the Saint Synod. Since April 1, 2004 he was appointed Chief Secretary of the Saint Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. In 2007 he receiveа the title Bishop of Stob. On 23.03.2014 he was elected from the Holy Synod as Metropolitan of Rousse town.
